PUBLIC RELATIONS

Public relations as “relations with the general public as through publicity; specif., those functions of a corporation, organization, etc. concerned with attempting to create favorable public opinion for it self. Public Relations(PR) is a field concerned with maintaining a public image for businesses, non-profit organizations or high-profile people, such as celebrities and politicians. An earlier definition of public relations, by The first World Assembly of Public Relations Associations held in Mexico City in August 1978, was "the art and social science of analyzing trends, predicting their consequences, counseling organizational leaders, and implementing planned programs of action, which will serve both the organization and the public interest."

Others define it as the practice of managing communication between an organization and its publics. Public relations provides an organization or individual exposure to their audiences using topics of public interest and news items that provide a third-party endorsement and do not direct payment. Once common activities include speaking at conferences, working with the media, crisis communications, social media engagement, and employee communication.

WHAT IS PUBLIC RELATION?

Peoples frequently talk about public relations without knowing exactly what it is. Because the field has many aspects – some obvious, some subtle-they may apprehend only one element of an intricate activity. Public relations is essential in today’s complex world, to smooth the process of communication and understanding. It involves research and analysis, policy formation, programming, communication, and feedback from the publics affected. Its practitioners operate on two distinct levels: as advisers to their clients or to a company’s management, and as technicians performing a multiplicity of functions.

DEFINITIONS:-

In 1948, the Council of the British Institute of Public Relations defined Public relations as “the deliberate, planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain mutual understanding between an organization and its publics.”

Public relations is the attempt by information, persuasion and adjustment to engineer public support for an activity, cause, movement or institution. (Edward L. Bernays[1])

According to John W. Hill public is the management function which gives the same organized and careful attention to the asset of goodwill as is given to any other major asset of business.

[1] dward Louis Bernays (November 22, 1891 – March 9, 1995), was an American pioneer in the field of public relations and propaganda along with Ivy Lee, referred to in his obituary as "the father of public relations"
